To help you get started with patenting your invention, the Patent and Trademark Offices will send you a free booklet upon request called General Information Concerning Patents. There are three legal elements involved in the process of invention: the conception of the idea, diligence in working it out, and reducing it to practice -i.e., getting a finished product that actually works. If you have a great idea you think might work, but you need time to develop it further before it is ready to be patented, what should you do?
