As the business world becomes more and more competitive, many US businesses are moving their companies to other parts of the globe. U.S. workers may lose their jobs when this happens. The government however, is willing to help! The President signed into law the Trade Adjustment Assistance Reform Act of 2002 (TAA Reform Act) on August 6, 2002, which provides you with assistance if you lose your job because of increased imports. The Trade Adjustment Assistance Reform Act has consolidated the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) into the TAA Reform Act. Any worker, no matter what their prior income level, can apply for assistance. The Trade Adjustment Assistance Reform Act of 2002 can help you learn marketable skills to move you on to new and better job opportunities. Workers may be eligible for up to 130 weeks of on-the-job and classroom training; you can receive 78 weeks of income benefits after your unemployment expires; you can receive $1,250 for job search and relocation expenses; health care benefits may also be available. This program is also available to farmers who have been hurt by imports!
